Way back in the distant spring of 1987, the smell of fresh lambs blowing across your nose, the excitement of new 'Kinder Egg' toys ever tempting you to buy chocolate you threw away cos it was so nasty, just to get the toys to sit on top of your computer screen I remember Gary Braces coming into where I was working at Ocean clutching a cassette tape and loudly stating "I've got the new 'Ultimate' game!" We all gathered round a grey 128 Spectrum, nothing had been advertised, no one had a clue what it was. We waited for it to load up and as it started we saw that it was a version of the 'then still in' progress 'Arkanoid'.
Thing was, it pissed all over the 'then still in' progress 'Arkanoid'. It had background graphics, it was slicker and just looked jolly lovely compared to the official 'Arkanoid' that was having it's finishing touches added just a few rooms away. I remember Gary swearing a lot.
Then all went quiet on the 'Ultimate' bat and ball game.
A good few months later 'Your Sinclair' featured a free game on a cassette called 'Batty'. It was an 'Arkanoid' clone and a good one. It was billed as an unreleased game from 'Elite'.
It looked exactly the same as the 'Ultimate' version I'd seen a few months back.
What I wanna know is (and have been wondering about all these years) is was it really an 'Ultimate' game? Was Gary mad? How did it get to being called an 'Elite' game? Did 'Ocean' put the stoppers on the 'Ultimate' version cos they'd paid for the license for the official version and could see this version was better?
I remember all this stuff like it was yesterday. So don't mock me for having posted the most messages so far out of everyone! I remember EVERYTHING!
