I see on the 'World Of Spectrum' website that, along with 'Ultimate' and some others, 'Odin Computer Graphics' have denied distribution of their old games.
Why would they do this? Surely they are so old now it doesn't matter?
What difference would a rom of 'Nodes of Yesod' or 'Sabrewulf' make to these companies now?
Also, all the old 'Ocean and 'Imagine' games are being distributed on the various Retro Games sites but who actually GRANTS the permission? Is it 'Atari' now who owns all those old games?Or are they just being distributed until somone who owns them says 'Stop!'?

I believe Tim Stamper has bought back the Ultimate brand (including the IP) so he can develop new products with his characters...
Can't really think why not distributing, say, jetpac these days would have the slightest effect.
I think WRT the Ocean/Imagine and many other games that are out there - until someone asks for them to be removed I think sites like WOS are assuming its OK (Ultimate and Odin specifically requested their products removal).
Its all a bit mad really - I can understand companies like Superior refusing permission as they still do sell Repton, Galaforce, Stryker's Run etc etc on PDA, Mobile Phones, PC...

I can't imagine Paul McKenna (Odin ex-boss) would have stopped that. Strange.

Far from it. Paul M was a decent bloke who, last time I saw him, had bought a farm in rural Tarbock (Liverpool) and was ploughing the fields. That's why I thought it odd that he would even be aware of the request, let alone deny it.

Well, he was rather blunt about the whole thing. He seemed put out that no-one asked him for permission.
I would personally assume that no-one knew where to find him, since Martijn at WoS really does go out of his way to find owners for permission.
The Stampers do indeed own the Utimate name again (after the sale to US Gold), and recently released a rather poor GBA version of Sabre Wulf. Sabreman even had a cameo in a Gamecube (or was it N64?) game.
But even so, I also agree that it's utter madness to deny distribution now. There's simply nothing to be gained other than disrespect from the fans.

Sabrewulf on the GBA was 3D pants.
But the Stampers and Rare/Ultimate are an odd bunch...I for one have not been impressed by anything they have done since the Ultimate days.
I always thought the adulation smacked of Emperor's new clothes with no-one actually wanting to say that their product was below par.

So, who owns the rights to Ocean & Imagine stuff now? I'd hate to think anyone else is about to go knocking on WoS's door any time soon... It'll be a pretty small archive they have if this keeps up Marko

Hmmm. Playing davil's advocate and having read all of the emails, I can see his point. He was, after all, just trying to protect his IP which he is going to try and license for mobile platforms in order to make back some money he may have lost. If you read the later emails, he doesn't reule out the future possibility of releasing the originals to WOS, and he makes it clear that he did not intend any malice towards the site - he obviously believed, at first, that someone was ripping him off. Yes, he does come across as heavy-handed at first, but later admits that he was trying to protect his interests and that he accepts no harm was intended by WOS. Overall, I don't believe Paul is in the wrong. My 2c.
