Steven Cain died last night at 11:25.
Apart from being my best friend, Steve was the person who got me my first job in the industry.
He was one of the first great pixel artists, an early member of the original team at Imagine in Liverpool; a founder member of Denton Designs and then part of so many other teams that it beggars belief.
He was larger than life and the best friend a person could have.
The industry and the world in general is an emptier and sadder place without him.

I'm truly very sad to hear this.
Hadn't seen Steve in many years, but whenever I think of him, I see him with that unmistakable grin - a good way to remember him.
My thoughts are with his family. R.I.P., Steve.

I've heard a lot about Steve Cain - mainly from Simon, you sounded like great mates.
A sad loss.

He was my art director and great friend at MicroProse and Psygnosis in the early nineties. Steve was one of the best, and I am going to miss him dearly. Simon Butler's phrase "larger than life" is the one that keeps coming back to me from his former MicroProse colleagues. I'm a little surprised that there is so little about him on the internet. www.mobygames.com has a listing for Steve, but no biography. Perhaps someone on this board could take the time to write a comprehensive bio about Steve to add to the mobygames site.

Although I have known Steve since my early days at Ocean I didn't really get to know him as the great friend he became until our time together at Acclaim. Steve was there for me through some very dark times and I always knew I could nip down to his office and I would come out smiling and laughing. We met for lunch just before Christmas and I went over to see him a couple of months ago when he was poorly, and Steve and I, and his wife Paula, exchanged comedy emails on a weekly basis. Thoughout his illness Steve's incredible sense of humour remained 100% in tact. My heart goes out to Paula and his family, and also to Simon and Jon who were very close to Steve. The Industry has lost a unique and talented person who was larger than life, and those who knew him well have lost a great friend.

Holy shit - Mike Taylor just told me about this. I'm absolutely gobsmacked - he was one of the truly great pixel artists. I met him through Simon many, many years ago and was always in awe of his work. My thoughts are with his friends and family at this very sad time. Rest in Peace.
I've just passed the sad news onto Gibbo over at Evolution.

This has got to be one of the saddest days of my life. I can't believe that Steve will never again come back into my life with his potato head and raucous laugh.

I have just shared a wonderful day with Steves closest family and friends, a humbling experience when you hear what a truely excellent bloke Steve was, during his brief life he touched many lives and truely influenced the lucky ones. One of the true founders of the games industry in my opinion and a man, father, husband and friend who will be missed with deep affection. I still have my Amiga and occasional flash it up just to play Prince. Thanks Steve. DC

Aye - that was John "Stonkers" Gibson.
That's two of the huge characters from Denton's that have left us far too early - Big Dave Colclough and now Steve.
