Around 1991/1992 I remember ads in the gaming press appearing for Universal Monsters, and isometric 3D game in a similar style to Knightlore/Head Over Heels.
A friend of mine even had a playable demo of this (possibly given away with `The One`), and I have to say that we quite enjoyed it. I've always been a sucker for isometric platformers, and was looking forward to adding this to my collection.
Unfortunately this title never appeared, which I thought was a real shame.
So, what happened to this? Did the game ever get completed before being canned?

Wasn't it earlier than 91/92 Rob? Nope. Just checked, and it came on a disk with the Feb 2003 issue of `The One`. Linkage: hol.abime.net/1813Rob

It was 1992 when I saw it. I remember it because thats when I had my interview. Steve Wahid showed me round and he took me into the room to see it. He introduced me to martin mcdonald who im pretty sure was working on it.
A few months into my job and it was canned, and as far as I know was either complete or 90% done, but didnt the programmer leave to goto creations?

Nope. Just checked, and it came on a disk with the Feb 2003 issue of `The One`. Rob Wow! Over 10 years in development then - must be a record!!! I only have the vaguest memories of this one. I do remember acquiring the license as Universal said there was going to be a major resurgence of the UM franchise, starting with Clive Barker remaking 'The Mummy'... an entirely different movie to that which Stephen Sommers made a few years later. Needless to say, the franchise never really got started, and that factor probably contributed to the decision to scrap it.

Wow! Over 10 years in development then - must be a record!!! Smartarse If this game was 90 or 100% completed, what's the chance of this being made available for free download on the site in the future?

Hey rab. Nice to hear from you mate. PM us your email address.
Universal Monsters was a nice looking game, but this leads me onto something else. Wouldnt someone get in shit from Atari if they released some older games that never came out? I mean, dont they own all of oceans back catalogue ?

True, but its a bit of a grey area I think. Still would be ace to see some of the older games released though. - John

I did the graphics for Universal Monsters.
Actually Gary asked me to come up with an original design and I was desperate to do an isometric Ultimate style thingumyjig...but as per bloody usual with Ocean as soon as you turn around someone's waving a, movie license at you.
But Universal Monsters I thought...how very Knight Lore.
Nope...Universal wanted their Monsters to look like their monsters and not be teeny tiny representations...so it was destined for the Amiga...with me designing it, doing the sprites with some very capable help from Mr McDonald and the code was to be written by Mike Halsall...
Over a year later...we still didn't have anything working at all...so as was the norm...dors were held open, a cder walked the green mile and ended up at the resting place for all those who couldn't hack it at Ocean...Software Creations!!
and he was there until Acclaim went belly-up not too long back.
I'm sure there must have been some mystical tunnel from Gary's Office to Richard Kay's place.

Hey Baz, Didn't you do the music to Universal Monsters ? Or was it Keith, I can't remember. Yeah that was me.. I think they are on my website somewhere... I think that was my first ocean product, written using octamed, Gary seemed to like them which really helped me get over my initial nervousness of working there..
