And what pray tell was wrong with Rastan exactly hmmm, do you know how hard it was to fit all that stuff into a CPC? I'm not sure it is possible to improve that game, I'd developed crunch systems that were way ahead of their time to get so many sprites in, and the maps were all compressed and uncrunched at run time, so that we could fit it in. If I'd had 256K and a sprite chip it would have been better, but as it stands I had 32K of RAM to fit a couple of huge graphically detailed maps in, dozens of monster types and all the AI to drive it....all in all, it was as good a job as it could be...so be nice when you call games like that bad...( and it didn't flicker...I had double buffered screens on that to prevent flicker...)they were limited by the hardware they were running on, and the need to complete in a timely fashion...eh Lorra? For Rastan CPC, more was certainly less. I loved your version of Yie Ar Kung Fu, but Rastan gave people a headache, flickery or not. It was also hard to see what was coming at you because of the small window. A full-screen flick-screen would have worked much better. Why try to get it all in, if it was so difficult to get it to fit. Gameplay should always be a number one priority. It might not be anything wrong with your coding, but rather the choices that were made before the coding started. Games like TLL cpczone.emuunlim.com/gamebase.php?game=919 shows that incredibly fast multidirectional hardware-scrolling could be done but the map on that game is probably very small compared to Rastan. An arcade-conversion do not have to be pixel-perfect to be good and playable.

huh? eh ? who? what? Which Brian? what did I miss? Johnny Cortex? slagged people off? me? no? him? I'm confused Grumpy...moi? Anyway back to Rastan, yeah I agree by most standards its a bit pants, but by average CPC gameplay at the time, standards it stood up, I'm not being overly defensive about this, most of the stuff I wrote back then was quick make it work and chuck out crap, and as Lorra knows, I had 2 other projects running at the same time (being the only CPC capable coder at Icon design at the time I got all the CPC work dumpe don me regardless of my ability to cope....hence my current love of time managment) so I really just wanted it to end and never really captured the feel of the game. I never enjoyed the work, it was too much compression and fancy stuff to fit it in, and not enough gameplay, but there you go. I've stopped teh twitching now, and hardly ever have the dream any more, if I keep taking the medication. I was mostly narked by the flicker comment, it most certainly didn't flicker as I said, since I used double screens to avoid that....creating even more problems of memory in the process. The worst problem was the grumpy producer, far grumpier than the usual grumpy producer I had to deal with A straight to GBA or mobile would certainly inccur the wrath of Taito but something more generic would be fun.
